Can You Sell What You Make On Canva?

Whether you’re a social media whiz looking to monetize your personal brand, or you love using graphic design programs and want to sell some of your creations on your blog, then you might be wondering whether or not you can actually sell your Canva designs to your following/audience.

To cut a long story short, there are a lot of copyright laws that you need to make yourself aware of, because the last thing that you want to happen while you are trying to make money, is to find yourself having to cash out on a large infringement lawsuit! So, what are the rules when it comes to selling designs that you have made in Canva?

To avoid finding yourself in hot water, the first thing to note down is that it is completely illegal to resell any printables and infographics (or anything else of the likes) that have been created via a Canva template – even if the content you have made is entirely original and has been made by yourself.

By using a template to begin creating a design for your brand, book, or even business, you will be both violating the terms of service and violating Canva’s copyright if you then decide to go ahead and sell the content that you have made.

Therefore, with that being said, under no circumstances can you utilize one of Canva’s own templates in order to create a design that you intend to monetize, as this will not be considered original content/work.

However, it is possible to sell content that has been made via Canva if the design is entirely original. This means that, if you were to create your very own custom design, you would not be violating Canva’s copyright policy if you were to then go ahead and monetize the design.

The only way that you could do this is to completely disregard all of the templates offered by Canva, and instead head over to the “blank slate” section, in which you would then be able to create your own content.

By using the blank slate option to create your content, you would not have changed or utilized any templates already made by Canva, which means that all of the content created would be considered to be completely original work. Thanks to that, it means that you then proceed to sell it if you so wished to

As a side note, if you do plan on using Canva to create designs that you can then sell, we highly recommend that you remember to make a note on your website (such as the product page) that the design is not affiliated with Canva in any way.

We also strongly recommend that you double-check that the final design you plan to sell is completely original and has not utilized or copied any of Canva’s templates, as you could also be sued for plagiarism.

Can I sell Printables made in Canva?

Offering plenty of conveniences and ease of use, Canva is an extremely popular content platform that can be used on a pc, laptop, and even your smartphone!

Created in 2012 in Perth, Australia, Canva is designed to cater to a variety of people, the sleek and intuitive interface of Canva makes graphic design accessible to small businesses, social media gurus, and hobbyists that might not have a lot of experience in using complicated software such as photoshop, alike.

Whether you want to create a poster for an upcoming event for your business, or you want to create more cohesive social media posts, then Canva makes it easy to build an online brand.

Now, if you are currently considering creating your own printable to sell on, then there are a few things that you need to keep in mind prior to launching the sale because the last thing that you want to do is violate Canva’s copyright terms.

To clarify, a printable is a digital file that can be downloaded when a purchaser pays a fee to gain access to the downloadable file.

Printables have been rising in popularity over the past few years, with many social media influencers and online business owners creating and selling printables such as e-books and self-help templates in a bid to monetize their online presence.

However, prior to selling any printables, it’s important to make sure that you are not violating any of Canva’s terms – let’s take a look at the rules regarding selling printables below:

You cannot:

  • Sell a printable on your blog or website if you have used a Canva template to help create it. This is violating Canva’s copyright policy, as you are not selling original work.
  • Sell a printable if you have used a Canva template and changed it to look completely different from the original template, as you will still have utilized a Canva template, which therefore means you cannot sell it off as your own.

You can:

  • Sell a printable if you have used Canva’s “blank canvas” as it does not contain any templates made by Canva, so all the work you will have created will be entirely your own.
  • Sell a printable if you have used a stock photo as the background, and then added text on top.

Can you sell Canva designs?

When it comes to selling Canva designs, the good news is that it is possible to sell your own designs, so long as you have abided by Canva’s copyright policy.

In order to ensure that you do not violate any of Canva’s terms of service, you will need to make sure that your designs are 100% original.

So, in other words, while you might be able to use Canva’s templates for personal and commercial use, if you plan on monetizing any of your designs, you are not going to be able to use any of Canva’s templates during the design process.

This is because the work is not entirely your own, so it will be illegal to make money from it. Instead, you will need to use Canva’s blank slate area, as all work created from this section does not use any of Canva’s templates.
